Music Therapy is both an art and a science. It has a strong research literature from areas within clinical therapy, bio-musicology, musical acoustics, music theory, psycho acoustics, music cognition and aesthetics of music. Referrals to Music Therapy can be made by many health care professionals such as Physicians, Psychologists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Physical and Occupational Therapists or by self referral. Music Therapists work in nearly every area of the helping professions. Many work within the field of developmental health, increasing motor and communication skills with children and young adults with special needs. Many work with the elderly, and particularly with clients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or stroke, as research supports that songwriting, listening in reminiscence, processing skills and relaxation are dramatically increased using Music as a therapeutic tool.
